Socket Insights allows you to generate reports using your Socket client, service, and proposal data using a secure, read-only, API connection in Google Sheets. This guide walks through how to set it up.

1. Set Up in Socket

To use Socket Insights, youโ€™ll first need to generate a read-only API key. This allows the report tools to access your data without making any changes to your data in Socket.

Generate an API Key

  1. Click the circle in the top right with your initials on, and choose Account Settings.

  2. Scroll down to the 'API Keys' section

  3. Choose 'Show API Keys'.

  4. Click 'New API Key'.

  5. Give the key a clear, recognisable name, such as 'Socket Insights'.

  6. Tick the permissions for the Read options.

  7. Click Save.

This can also be done in practice settings under the 'Integrations' section.

Once saved, copy and store the API key immediately. For security reasons, the key will not be shown again after this step. If you didn't copy the code when prompted then you'll need to delete that API key and create a new one.

2. Connecting Socket Insights to Google Sheets

Once your Socket API key has been created, the next step is to connect Socket Insights to Google Sheets using the Socket add-on.

Install the Socket Insights Add-on

  1. Open Google Sheets.

  2. Create a new blank spreadsheet (or open an existing one).

  3. Click Extensions in the top menu.

  4. Select Add-ons โ†’ Get add-ons.

  5. Search for Socket Insights.

  6. Click Install and accept the required permissions.

Enter Your API Key

  1. In Google Sheets, click 'Extensions'.

  2. From the drop down menu select 'Socket Insights'.

  3. Click 'Set API Key'.

  4. Enter the API Key that was shown in Socket.

At this point, Socket Insights is fully connected and ready to use.

  1. In Google Sheets, click 'Extensions'.

  2. Select 'Socket Insights'.

  3. Choose 'Open Sidebar' or select the report from the 'Reports' dropdown menu to start generating your reporting.
