Overview
In addition to the standard dynamic tags in Socket, you can create your own custom tags to personalise your templates even further. These can be added directly into proposals, engagement letters, or any editable document to insert client-specific or contextual details.
Custom dynamic tags don’t pull data from Socket automatically, but you can either set a default value for them, or fill them manually each time you use the document.
What Are Custom Dynamic Tags?
Custom dynamic tags are placeholders you create yourself, shown in square brackets like this: [example_tag]
When used in a proposal or template, they act as flexible fields that you can:
Pre-fill with a default value, using the dynamic tag set up.
Manually complete during the proposal setup.
They’re ideal for adding details that may not be already covered with Socket's current dynamic tags.
How to Create a Custom Dynamic Tag
Open any document or text editor in Socket where you can use tags, such as a proposal or engagement letter.
In the editor, type the left square bracket
[.As you start typing existing tags will appear.
Select the new tag from the dropdown which appears while typing.
The tag will now appear inline in your text.
Choose 'Apply' to save changes, then be sure to save changes on your document.
Setting Default or Manual Values
When a document template includes a tag, you’ll see a message bar at the top of the screen allowing you to:
Set default values for your custom tags (applies automatically to all new proposals and engagement letters using this document with this tag).
Or enter values manually as you complete each proposal.
Tips for Using Custom Tags
Use short, descriptive names — for example
[client_deadline]instead of[tag1].Avoid using spaces or special characters in tag names.
Preview your proposal to confirm tags appear where expected.
Keep a note of custom tags your practice uses regularly for consistency across templates.
